SHILLONG, Jan 12: The 41st National Youth Day, marking the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Shillong, on Sunday, honouring the iconic leader whose teachings continue to inspire generations.
Swami Hitakamanandaji Maharaj, secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong, presided over the event as the chief guest. Distinguished dignitaries from Nehru Yuva Kendra and other revered monks also graced the occasion with their presence.
The programme began with a floral tribute to Swami Vivekananda’s statue, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and the chanting of his inspiring ‘Swadesh Mantra’.
In his welcome address, Swami Vedeshananda, Director of the Vivekananda Cultural Centre, recounted Swami Vivekananda’s remarkable life, highlighting his divine birth, impactful actions, and his time spent in Shillong. He emphasised Swamiji’s deep love for his countrymen and urged the audience to explore his works to better understand Indian culture and its profound diversity.
In his keynote address, Swami Hitakamananda stressed the relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s vision of “man-making and character-building education.” He underscored the importance of living a life rooted in truth, purity, and selflessness. Quoting Swamiji, he said, “Purity, patience, and perseverance are the three essentials to success, and above all, love.” He encouraged the youth to embrace these values to excel and contribute meaningfully to society.
The event ended with an inspiring address by Swami Divyaswarupanandaji Maharaj, assistant secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong. He urged the youth to draw strength from Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and actively participate in the nation-building process.
