The foundation for the Captain Williamson Sangma State University was laid in 2011 with the enactment of the Captain Williamson Sangma State Technical University Act, 2011. Civil construction commenced in 2019 on 30 acres of land gifted by the Nokma and Chra-Mahari of Samingre in February, 2016. Completed in December 2022, the university’s facilities include administrative and academic buildings, hostels and activity blocks.
Funded by a Special Plan Assistance of Rs 16.96 crore, the university is poised to offer post-graduate programmes, skill-based courses, diploma, and certificate programmes, with an initial intake of 30 students per course. It aims to foster academic excellence, innovation and holistic development of students.
As Chief Minister Sangma assured during his address, the Shillong campus of the university will also commence soon, further enhancing accessibility to higher education across the state.
