Meghalaya CM apprises IOA of state’s willingness to host National Games in 2027

Shillong, Jan 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday held meeting with the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) P. T Usha via video conference in presence of officials of the Meghalaya Olympic Association (MOA).

During the meeting, the Chief Minister briefed the President of the IOA on the readiness and preparedness of the state to host the 39th National Games in 2027.

The Chief Minister informed that in the last four years, the state has invested in creation of sports infrastructures, including upgradation of JN Sports Complex in Shillong, Wahijher Stadium in Jaintia Hills and P.A. Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura and various other sporting facilities.

He also informed that Shillong has successfully hosted many sporting events including the North East Games in 2022, South Asian Games in 2016 and for the last three years have been regularly hosting the Meghalaya Games.

Commissioner Sports & Youth Affairs Dr. D. Vijay Kumar informed that the state has signed an agreement with the IOA in 2018, which states that Shillong will be the host city, and two other cities i.e Tura and Jowai will host different sports disciplines for the National Games.

President of IOA said that the association is considering to give Meghalaya the opportunity to host the games.

This year the games are being held at Uttarakhand, and in 2026, the national games will not be held as India is hosting the Asian Games next year.
