SHILLONG, Jan 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is set to meet his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma after the upcoming district council elections to address the unresolved interstate border disputes in the remaining six areas.
Sangma on Wednesday said he had an informal conversation with Sarma, who requested him to propose dates for the meeting after the elections.
The second phase of border talks between the two neighbouring states has been on hold for more than two years with Assam reportedly showing little interest in resuming discussions. This delay persists despite both states having formed regional committees to address the long-standing boundary dispute.
Sangma expressed hope that the post-election discussions would bring progress in resolving the remaining issues, building upon the foundation laid during previous negotiations.
The border dispute, which has led to tensions between the two states for decades, remains one of the most pressing challenges for both governments.
