SHILLONG, Jan 15: Amid growing criticism against the VIP culture in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday called for restraint and advised VIPs to avoid exploiting their privileges. He emphasized the need for a balance between ensuring their security and respecting the convenience of the people.
The CM disclosed that the government is reviewing the use of sirens, flickering lights, and other mechanisms associated with VIP security. The Police department has been tasked with examining the matter and submitting a detailed report to the Cabinet.
Acknowledging that individuals with Z+ category security are subject to the Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines, Sangma highlighted the importance of separating genuine safety needs from abuse of VIP privileges.
“We must provide necessary security to VIPs without causing inconvenience or harassment to the public,” he asserted, advising VIPs to avoid aggressive posturing and misuse of their status.
Sangma took pride in the fact that he rarely used sirens during his travel. “You don’t need to use sirens everywhere. We must be more reasonable and practical. If there is no space, no one will make room for you regardless of how much siren you use,” he remarked.
The CM also assured that the government would streamline the process to prevent misuse of sirens, flickering lights, and personal security officers (PSOs). “While the safety and security of VIPs remain a priority, abusing these privileges is unacceptable, and the government will be strict on this matter,” Sangma assured.
