SHILLONG, Jan 18: Meghalaya’s tourism sector is witnessing significant growth as several exotic locations continue to attract visitors. While the state’s scenic beauty draws tourists from across the country, logistical challenges remain a concern.
Markham, a destination in West Khasi Hills that has gained considerable popularity in recent years, is often compared to Nagaland’s Dzukou Valley for its breathtaking landscapes and stunning views. Despite its potential as a major tourist attraction, accessibility remains a challenge.
Many visitors have reported navigation issues with Google Maps, which often leads them to non-motorable roads.
“Google Maps shows one route, but many tourists end up taking difficult, unmotorable paths,” a visitor shared.
Another tourist explained that while a more suitable road exists, the discrepancy in navigation causes confusion and wastes valuable time.
Additionally, the last stretch of the road to Markham is non-motorable, prompting calls for government intervention.
“If the authorities want this place to become the next Laitlum, they need to address these issues,” said one tourist.
Others suggested that the state government should correct mapping errors or install signboards to assist travelers. “We had a tough time finding this place, but we were determined to visit it. I think the Meghalaya Government can at least rectify the mapping error or put up signboards along the road to help tourists locate the place,” another visitor suggested.
It is worth mentioning that Markham’s growing popularity is largely attributed to social media exposure, which has attracted a surge of tourists from Assam and other neighbouring states.
Recognising this, the state government has invited a tender for road construction, including metalling and blacktopping of the Laitmurok-Markham road (0.00-1.50 km) at a cost of Rs 2 crore.
