SHILLONG, Jan 19: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has centred its MDC election campaign on upholding the Sixth Schedule, vowing to protect, promote and preserve the rights of tribal communities in Meghalaya.
“For this MDC election, we stand by the ideology of the Sixth Schedule to safeguard the rights of the tribal people in the state,” said KHNAM working president, Thomas Passah.
He emphasised that the Sixth Schedule was granted to protect the rights and customary practices of the indigenous people, reaffirming that this remains the party’s core stance for the upcoming election to the autonomous district councils (ADCs).
Discussing the party’s campaign progress, Passah stated, “We are in fast-track mode, preparing intensively, and hoping for the best.”
When asked about the response from voters, he remarked, “Elections are unpredictable. As a political party, we do our best, but ultimately, the decision lies with the people. Our job is to work to our full capacity and respect the democratic process.”
He added that KHNAM had been rigorously preparing for a long time and would continue its efforts until the final day of campaigning. “I won’t exaggerate. We have been preparing rigorously and for a long time and we will be preparing till that last date of campaigning and the rest lies with the mind of the people,” he said.
It may be mentioned that in early December, KHNAM released a list of eight candidates for the upcoming MDC elections, which includes the name of Thomas Passah who will contest from Jaiaw constituency.
