SHILLONG, Jan 19: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Sunday said the government is aware of the disproportionately large number of schools in Meghalaya as compared to its population but made it clear that randomly closing down schools with zero or less enrolment was not an option.
“We are aware of the (situation) and taking all possible measures to correct it. Such schools have been identified and correctional measures have been initiated,” said Sangma.
“We are exercising the rationalisation. Where there are zero enrolments we are shifting the teachers to some other schools and those with low enrolments we are giving them time to improve,” he said.
According to him, that was the reason why Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recently gave a presentation in Tura to make people aware about the challenges in the education sector.
