SHILLONG, Jan 28: Two candidates from KHNAM besides one from the HSPDP in Mawsynram, an independent candidate from Sohryngkham and an NPP nominee and another independent from Rambrai-Jyrngam filed their nominations on Tuesday for the upcoming polls to the KHADC, scheduled for February 21.
KHNAM’s Joseph A Pyngrope, contesting from Sohryngkham constituency, submitted his nomination at the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office, while party’s Peter Challam, contesting from Laitumkhrah-Malki, filed his nomination at ISBT, Mawlai Mawiong.
Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Pyngrope stated that KHNAM is a movement committed to protecting the interests of the indigenous tribes. He said the party would continue raising issues affecting the indigenous population, regardless of the election outcome. Pyngrope highlighted the need for legislation to strengthen traditional institutions and pledged to address the issue of influx.
Meanwhile, Challam, the KHNAM candidate from Laitumkhrah-Malki, noted that the KHADC plays a crucial role in addressing problems faced by rural communities. He expressed concern over increasing poverty and the rising number of landless families in rural areas.
Challam also underscored the need to regulate rampant mining and quarrying activities under the council’s jurisdiction, which have severely impacted the environment. He called for rejuvenating water sources and ecosystems, pointing out that, according to official reports, 749 water sources are in critical condition. “These are issues the Council must take seriously,” he asserted, while also emphasising the importance of educating the public on the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard the rights, interests, and culture of indigenous tribes.
Other candidates who filed their nominations include Starfing Pdahkasiej, the HSPDP candidate from Mawsynram, and an independent candidate from Sohryngkham.
In Nongstoin, two candidates contesting from Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency in West Khasi Hills also filed their nominations. The candidates are former MLA and NPP nominee Kimfa Sydney Marbaniang and independent candidate Lurshai Kharbani.
Marbaniang told the press that he decided to contest due to pressure and support from his followers. Notably, the sitting MDC of Rambrai-Jyrngam, Bajop Pyngrope, who is Marbaniang’s brother-in-law, is not contesting the upcoming elections.
“I urge the public to carefully elect a representative who will genuinely serve them in the KHADC,” Marbaniang added.
Meanwhile, Kharbani expressed confidence in his victory, citing strong support from his constituents.
Both candidates were accompanied by supporters and party leaders as they filed their nomination papers, signaling the start of a competitive political battle in Rambrai-Jyrngam.
