SHILLONG, Jan 28: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday endorsed the need for more initiatives like the one organised by the Mawlai Town Durbar (MTD), which provided a common platform for public engagement, rather than relying solely on random meetings and campaigns.
According to the UDP, such platforms represent a healthy trend in a democratic setup as they allow the public to see and hear candidates from various political parties in one venue, assess their potential, and make informed decisions.
“Frankly speaking, the MTD has done a commendable job. Too many meetings, especially now with exams just around the corner, can significantly affect the student community,” said UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh.
He added, “Having a common platform is very beneficial. It gives the public an opportunity to listen to candidates discuss the district council elections, their competency, their understanding of the issues, and the concerns they wish to address.”
Mawthoh further suggested that candidates be given the chance to debate important issues related to the district councils on such platforms. “If there is a chance for candidates to debate these issues, we would welcome it wholeheartedly. It enables people to judge the candidates based on their understanding of the issues and how they articulate the concerns of the public. It also reflects their sincerity and capability,” he said.
He expressed hope that other Dorbar Shnongs would adopt similar initiatives. “If all Dorbar Shnongs follow this example, it will greatly benefit the electorate. A common platform encourages transparency and fosters healthy debate, which is essential in a democracy.”
The UDP’s stance is sharply in contrast to that of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), which views the MTD’s initiative as an infringement on the fundamental rights of candidates and political parties.
