Tejas Shirse breaks own 60m hurdles record in indoor meet
New Delhi, Feb 1:Tejas Shirse broke his own national record in men’s 60m hurdles while finishing second at the Elite Indoor Track Meeting in Miramas, France. Shirse clocked 7.64 seconds at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver level event on Friday to better his earlier national record time of 7.65 seconds, set at the CMCM Indoor Meeting in Luxembourg on January 19. This was his third race of the season. His timing is, however, still short of the qualifying mark of 7.57 seconds for the World Indoor Championships to be held in Nanjing, China in March. The 22-year-old Shirse is also the national record holder in 110m hurdles — an outdoor event — with a time of 13.41 seconds.Meanwhile, reigning Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji finished fifth in the women 60m hurdles in the same meet with a time of 8.10s. The 25-year-old Yarraji had clinched 60m hurdles gold in her first race of the season with a national record time of 8.04 seconds on January 25 at the Elite Indoor Meeting in Nantes, France. (PTI)
Inaugural Indian Navy Half Marathon to be held today
New Delhi, Feb 1: TThe inaugural edition of the Indian Navy Half Marathon (INHM) will be held here on Sunday. Over 10,000 participants are expected to compete across three race categories – 21.1km, 10km and 5km runs – making it an inclusive event for runners of all calibers and backgrounds. The event is being organised in partnership with IDFC FIRST Bank. The event will be hosted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, with the race route covering the India Gate and the historic Kartavya Path. INHM will be flagged off by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The event will also be graced by senior officers and distinguished personalities from the Armed Forces, civilian guests and renowned sportspersons. (PTI)
Mohan wins national trophy in his first Formula racing season
Chennai, Feb 1: Bengaluru teenager Abhay Mohan, who won one of the two premier single-seater National Championships in the prestigious MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Car Racing Championships in 2024, won his first National Championship Trophy at a glittering awards ceremony here. The 16-year-old 2022 Junior National Karting champion dominated the track in his very first year after graduating into single-seater racing this year, and notched up 10 race wins from 12 races in the MRF 1600cc National Championship. UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy to miss Women’s Premier League
Melbourne, Feb 1: Australia and UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy has opted out of the upcoming edition of the Women’s Premier League due to stress injury to her right foot and was non committal about her future beyond the ODI World Cup in India later this year. Healy has captained UP Warriorz in each of the first two editions of the WPL with the third one set to be held across four venues in Vadodara, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Mumbai from February 14 to March 15. Healy captained Australia in their emphatic women’s Ashes win over England but has struggled in the last few months with her fitness, barely making it to the one-off Test after missing the T20Is. India wicketkeeper-batter Saha retires from all forms of cricket
Kolkata, Feb 1: India wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha retired from all forms of cricket on Saturday, bringing down the curtains on an illustrious career after playing his final Ranji Trophy group-stage match for Bengal against Punjab at the iconic Eden Gardens here. The 40-year-old Saha, who made his international debut in February 2010, has played 49 matches for India across formats – 40 Tests and nine ODIs. He also represented Bengal and Tripura in domestic cricket, featuring in 142 First-Class and 116 List A matches. (PTI)
Tennis legend Shriver’s trophies are back after being taken in stolen car
Los Angeles, Feb 1: International Tennis Hall of Fame member Pam Shriver has her trophies back, regaining the dozen or so pieces of hardware that were in a car stolen from the hotel where she was staying after evacuating from her home during the spread of devastating wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area. “It was an interesting chapter. I wish the trophies could talk,” Shriver said in a telephone interview Friday. “I would like to have known where they’ve been.” Shriver won 21 Grand Slam doubles championships – all but one alongside Martina Navratilova – a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics and a total of 111 doubles titles. Shriver, now a TV commentator and coach, was inducted into the sport’s Hall in 2002. Like so many other LA residents, Shriver left her home as part of a mandatory evacuation as the fires spread. In the end, she said, her home was fine. But while she was staying at a hotel, a car that contained some of her personal belongings, including family photos going back decades, was taken. The car still has not been recovered, Shriver said, but the trophies were dropped off in boxes placed outside the hotel about 10 days later, and she finally got them back this week. (PTI)
15-year-old Kartik Singh makes history at International Series India
Gurugram, Feb 1: Indian amateur Kartik Singh made history, becoming the youngest player from the subcontinent to make the cut in an Asian Tour event at the International Series India here on Saturday. The 15-year-old Singh carded a one-under-par 71, bringing his total to four-over at the halfway stage, comfortably inside the cut line, which fell at eight-over at the DLF Golf and Country Club. This was Singh’s second appearance in a professional tournament, having previously played just one Asian Development Tour event. The field, featuring stars like two-time Major winner Bryson DeChambeau, home favourite Anirban Lahiri, and LIV Golf League’s Joaquin Niemann, was one he could have only dreamed of. Singh, ranked world No.1 in the Under-15 amateur category, credited his familiarity with the course for his strong performance. (PTI)
