SHILLONG, Feb 4: Amidst growing demand for creation of additional blocks across the state, the Meghalaya government has stated that the creation of new administrative blocks will depend on the availability of resources.
Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Minister AT Mondal on Tuesday emphasised that the government must first assess resource availability before making any decisions.  “We are studying these proposals,” Mondal said, acknowledging requests from various regions.
Recently, the state’s 56th administrative block, Mawhati, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The decision to establish the block followed the induction of local MLA Charles Marngar and other legislators into the National People’s Party (NPP) last year.
Defending the creation of the Mawhati block, Mondal highlighted the region’s remoteness. “Mawhati is one of the most remote parts of the state, and residents have to travel 80-90 km to reach the block headquarters,” he explained.
While recognising the need for new blocks to improve administrative access, the minister reiterated that financial and logistical feasibility would be key factors in future decisions.
