SHILLONG, Feb 5: The High Court of Meghalaya has directed Amicus Curiae S Panthi to inspect the entire stretch of National Highway 6 between Jowai and Ratacherra and file a report before the court.
Hearing a PIL on the matter, the Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh on Wednesday took note of the submission made by S Sengupta, advocate appearing for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), that a five-kilometre stretch of NH-6 has been comprehensively repaired.
The Court had earlier ordered thorough repair of the 45-km stretch between Jowai and Ratacherra.
Sengupta submitted that substantial repair work in the rest of the stretch has also been undertaken, is continuing and it is likely to be completed within reasonable time.
“If the repair work has been carried out and to be further carried out in terms of the submission of S Sengupta, then the entire highway having length of 102.225 km would become free from obstruction and freely negotiable, bringing great benefit to its users and to the state,” the Court said, while directing the Amicus Curiae to inspect the entire highway and file a report in the Court by February 21.
The Court directed the state government to make all arrangements for the travel and stay, if necessary, of the Amicus Curiae and ordered NHAI to pay a further remuneration of Rs 20,000 to him.
The high court listed the matter for hearing on February 24.
