SHILLONG, Feb 7: The first phase of the Shillong-Dawki road project, which involves constructing a four-lane road from Rilbong to Baniun at 7th Mile, is making significant progress.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is optimistic that a major portion of the work will be completed within the next two months.
A site visit revealed steady construction activity at multiple locations, with workers engaged around the clock to expedite the project. This section is crucial as it aims to reduce traffic congestion along Upper Shillong and Shillong Road. According to reports, the overall physical progress of Package 1 stands at approximately 45%, while road-related work alone is about 65% complete. The project also includes bypasses designed to divert traffic away from congested market areas.
Initially, the plan was to extend the project to Anjalee Point with an overpass. However, the stretch from Rilbong to Anjalee Point has now been excluded, and the road will terminate at Rilbong instead. The overpass construction is expected to be taken up later, with plans to extend it to Barik.
The government is currently in discussions with Defence authorities regarding land acquisition for this extension.
The 11.6 km-long four-lane road is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 351.12 crore.
