NONGPOH, Feb 7: In a bid to uplift the livelihood of traditional weavers in Ri-Bhoi, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Office of the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner.
The MoU—inked on Thursday between IOCL representatives and Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal in the presence of other officials and weavers from the district —aims to implement a special assistance project for weavers under IOCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Speaking to the media persons, Additional Deputy Commissioner Raja Brahma informed that under the agreement, IOCL will provide 254 solar-powered Eri spinning units, which will be distributed  across 30 weaving centers in 30 villages of Ri-Bhoi.
These centres, he said, play a vital role in the region’s traditional Eri silk weaving industry.
Brahma further informed that IOCL has allocated Rs 62.98 lakh under its CSR initiative for these spinning units.
