London, Feb 9: The FA Cup continued to deliver its trademark drama as top-flight teams faced stiff resistance from lower-league opposition, resulting in thrilling contests and surprising outcomes.
Joy for Newcastle
Already set for the English League Cup final, Newcastle United advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a narrow 3-2 win over Birmingham City. Despite their Premier League pedigree, Newcastle found themselves in a fierce battle against the third-tier League One leaders.
Birmingham, part-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady, stunned the visitors by taking the lead inside the first minute at St. Andrew’s through Ethan Laird.
Newcastle responded quickly, with Callum Wilson equalizing, but a spectacular long-range effort from Birmingham’s Tomoki Iwata brought the score back to 2-2 before halftime. Newcastle had to dig deep and waited until the 82nd minute to regain the lead, with Joe Willock netting his second of the game to secure the win.
Chelsea Eliminated
Eight-time FA Cup winners Chelsea suffered a shock exit at the hands of Brighton, losing 2-1 despite an early advantage. Chelsea appeared to be in control when Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen mishandled Cole Palmer’s cross, diverting it into his own net within the first five minutes at AMEX Stadium.
However, Brighton quickly regrouped. Georginio Rutter leveled the score just seven minutes later, and Kaoru Mitoma fired home the winner in the second half, sending Chelsea out of the competition in a disappointing fashion.
Bournemouth’s Run Continues
Bournemouth, enjoying a strong Premier League campaign, continued their impressive form in the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Everton.
Antoine Semenyo’s penalty and a goal from Daniel Jebbison had the visitors comfortably ahead by halftime at Goodison Park.
Everton mounted a determined second-half fightback, hitting the post three times. Despite their efforts, David Moyes’ side couldn’t find a way through, and Bournemouth progressed to the fifth round.
Ipswich’s Cup Journey Rolls On
While Ipswich Town’s primary focus remains on avoiding relegation from the Premier League, their cup run remained alive with a commanding 4-1 win over second-tier Coventry City. Jack Clarke starred for Ipswich, netting twice in a match that showcased their attacking prowess.
Southampton Stumbles Again
Southampton, languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, endured further misery with a 1-0 home defeat to Burnley. Burnley, currently vying for promotion to the top division, secured the win thanks to their resolute defense, recording their 10th shutout in the last 11 games.
Muniz Double Propels Fulham
Rodrigo Muniz was the hero for Fulham, scoring both goals in their hard-fought 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic. Wigan, who famously won the FA Cup in 2013 against Manchester City before being relegated days later, pushed Fulham to the limit. (AP)
