SHILLONG, Feb 16: In the wake of serious allegations levelled by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has stressed the need for proof before any action can be taken against the University.
“Without verifying the facts, I cannot comment on this. Anyone can make allegations, but they must be supported by evidence. It may be true, or it may not be, but I cannot verify without proof,” Sangma said. He further added, “This is a very serious and unfortunate accusation. However, if it is true, the government will definitely take appropriate action.”
Sarma, on Sunday, accused USTM of large-scale fraud, issuing fake degrees, and financial mismanagement. These accusations have heightened concerns about the recent dismissal of employees at the private university. “These are serious allegations, but if they are officially communicated with substantial evidence, they will be taken seriously. It is too early to react, but if and when the situation demands, we will act accordingly,” Sangma added, emphasising that the Meghalaya government will not jump to conclusions without concrete proof.
The Assam Chief Minister launched a sharp attack against USTM and its Chancellor, Mahbubul Hoque, calling him “fraudulent” and accusing the institution of operating deceptively by distributing fake certificates. Sarma went further, questioning Hoque’s credentials and alleging that his caste certificate was fabricated.
This is not the first time Sarma has targeted USTM. In the past, he has blamed the university for large-scale waterlogging in Guwahati and raised concerns over Hoque’s alleged procurement of a fake OBC certificate.
He also suggested that the Assam government is considering whether degrees from USTM should be recognised for government job applications in the state.
As the controversy surrounding USTM continues to grow, the Meghalaya government has maintained a cautious stance, refraining from taking action unless official complaints with verifiable evidence are presented.
With allegations escalating, all eyes are on whether the Assam government will formally move forward with its claims and how Meghalaya’s administration will respond under mounting scrutiny.
