SHILLONG, Feb 17: The NPP has backed strengthening of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution through the proposed Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill which will pave way for direct funding to the villages.
It is expected that Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill is likely to be tabled in Parliament during the ongoing budget session.
“There will be direct funding from the Centre if the amendments to the Sixth Schedule materialise,” Rajya Sabha member and NPP leader, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi said on Monday.
Asserting that people can promise heaven and earth during election campaigns, he said what is necessary is to strengthen the functioning of the district councils.
Refusing to comment on the demand for implementation of Article 371, the Rajya Sabha MP asked people to remember what happened to Jammu & Kashmir which was protected under Article 370.
Mentioning that the state government has already suggested the need to delete Para 12A of the Sixth Schedule, he said that the committee constituted by the Centre is still examining the matter.
“Once all the ADCs give their views then it will be tabled in the Cabinet and finally in the Parliament,” Kharlukhi added.
