Resubelpara, Feb 20: A complaint has been filed with the Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills by social activist Nilbath Marak against an ‘illegally’ running stone crusher in the village of Wageasi in the district.
The quarry has been running for over half a decade from the same area with wide-scale operations. While there were murmurs of the operation being illegal, no one had pointed to the aspect that the site could be without valid permits for operation until the complaint by the activist.
Seeking an inquiry into the operation of the stone quarry, Nilbath stated it was being operated by the brother of the Rongjeng MLA, Jim M Sangma without any form of scientific mining plan.
“I saw firsthand labourers loading stones onto dumper trucks from the quarry which is then transported to neighbouring Assam. The quarry is not only illegal, it is also allowing for trucks to overload and carry goods. Further labourers are loading these stones from the side of the road and disrupting normal flow of traffic,” said Nilbath in his complaint.
The activist stated that with no scientific plan in place, the rampant quarrying of stones from the area could have a major impact on the water table of the area and as such needed to be looked into and intervened.
