Shillong, Feb 21: The four sitting KHADC MDCs on Friday are hopeful that the electorates of their respective constituencies will re-elect them by judging on the work they had done in the past six years.
Sitting MDC and NPP candidate from Laitumkhrah constituency, Fantin J Lakadong is confident to win since he has fulfilled his responsibility as the MDC in the past six years.
While speaking to reporters after casting his vote, Lakadong said that there is nothing that will concern him since he has done his job with utmost dedication.
Sitting MDC and independent candidate from Mawlai, Teibor Pathaw said that it is usual as the contesting candidate he is hopeful that the people of the constituency will again repose their faith in him.
After casting his vote, Pathaw said that he has given his best for the betterment of the constituency.
He also said that as the former Executive Member he has contributed in the passing of important legislation to strengthen and recognise the traditional institutions and safeguard the interests of the indigenous tribes.
The sitting MDC from Mawlai said that he will prioritise addressing the youth in the constituency if he is re-elected.
Meanwhile, UDP candidate from the Laban-Mawprem constituency, Mitchell Wankhar said that he tried his best possible service to work for the overall development of the constituency during the past six years. The sitting UDP MDC said that he is hopeful that the people of the constituency will again vote in his favour like they have done in 2019. Replying to the query, he said that if he is re-elected he will try to follow up to see that the long pending Village Administration Bill becomes an Act.
Wankhar said that he will also raise the issue of the need to review the Meghalaya Building Bye-Laws of 2021 to help simplify the process of obtaining the building permissions.
He said that he would impress upon the council to charge a minimal rate for the building permission so people coming from poor economic backgrounds would benefit.
UDP candidate from Langkyrdem-Laitkroh, Ryngkatlang Lyndem said that he has not highlighted any issues or agendas during his election campaign. He stated that he started his campaign only around 20 days before the election.
He said that he is confident to win if the electorates in the constituency still love and have faith in him like in the 2019 district council elections where they have voted for his victory.
The sitting UDP MDC said that he does not need to campaign since the people will judge on the work he had done in the past six years as an MDC.
Lyndem said that he had instead asked his supporters to campaign on his behalf to tell the electorates about the good work that he had done.
“People will vote for me if I still deserve it,” he said.
The UDP sitting MDC said that the mandate of the council as per the provisions in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution talks over the ownership of local indigenous tribes over land and mineral resources besides the promotion and protection of the culture and customary practices.
According to him, what is important is to strengthen the various existing laws and legislations of the council.
