TURA, Feb 25: In a significant milestone for healthcare access in the region, Boldamgre village, located along the Indo-Bangladesh border in South West Garo Hills (SWGH), inaugurated its first Urban Health and Wellness Centre (UHWC). The facility was officially inaugurated on Tuesday by Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay A Sangma, whose ancestral roots trace back to Boldamgre. The event was attended by Digonto Hajong, BDO of Zikzak Block, District Medical and Health Officer Dr H Barman, Nokma of Boldamgre village, VHC members, medical fraternity, health officials and others.
The Urban Health and Wellness Centre aims to enhance primary healthcare services in the region, ensuring that residents have access to quality medical care closer to home.
This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in rural and border areas.
As part of the event, MLA Sanjay Sangma also launched the “Eat Right, Eat Healthy” initiative by the District Health Society, SWGH. This initiative promotes healthy eating practices and encourages the serving of nutritious snacks and food during National Health Programmes and official meetings of the Medical Department.
Speaking at the event, MLA Sanjay A Sangma applauded the medical team for their hard work and dedication. He acknowledged the commendable progress of various health programs in the district and emphasized his commitment to working alongside the health team. Expressing his joy over the UHWC opening in his birthplace, he recalled that 45 years ago, residents had to travel to Mankachar hospital for treatment. Now, with the new facility, emergency services are available within walking distance for the people of Boldamgre. He urged the newly appointed staff to work closely with the community and coordinate with the district health team.
In his welcome address, Dr. H. Barman highlighted the urgent need for a health center in the locality and detailed the various medical services it will provide to surrounding villages. The Nokma of Boldamgre, in his gratitude speech, congratulated the newly appointed health staff and wished them the best in serving the community with dedication.
Dr. Noreen Sangma, DMCHO (i/c) SWGH, emphasized the comprehensive primary healthcare services that the UHWC will provide, ensuring better health outcomes for the region. Additionally, Shri J. Hajong, Chairman of Programme Implementation & Monitoring, highlighted the local MLA’s efforts in healthcare development, including the distribution of three ambulances to the community.
The establishment of the Urban Health and Wellness Centre marks a step forward in providing accessible and affordable healthcare to the people of Boldamgre and nearby areas.
