Lahore, Feb 26: England suffered another injury scare in the ICC Champions Trophy as pacer Mark Wood limped off midway through his spell against Afghanistan on Tuesday.
The speedster, bowling his fourth over in England’s second game of the tournament, was seen walking gingerly before receiving treatment from the team physio. Wood was assisted in stretching his left knee before managing to complete his over. However, despite returning to bowl four more overs, he appeared uncomfortable again later in the innings and eventually left the field after the 43rd over.
Wood’s injury scare comes at a difficult time for England, who have already lost Brydon Carse for the remainder of the tournament. Carse sustained an injury during the match against Australia and was subsequently replaced by Rehan Ahmed in the squad.
The 34-year-old Wood has endured a history of injuries throughout his career and was sidelined for nearly a year in 2024 due to an ankle issue. In England’s tournament opener against Australia, he played a crucial role by dismissing Steve Smith, finishing with figures of 1/75.
With England’s fast-bowling resources already stretched, Wood’s fitness will be a key concern for the team management as they look to navigate the rest of the tournament. (Agencies)
