SHILLONG, Feb 27: Following an unimpressive performance in the recently concluded MDC elections, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to contest the upcoming GHADC elections in Garo Hills next year.
UDP leader and MDC Titosstarwell Chyne told the media on Thursday that the party is concerned about its declining vote share in the MDC polls, attributing it to the VPP wave. “We will now focus on strengthening the party in Garo Hills as the GHADC elections are set to take place next year,” he said, confirming UDP’s decision to contest the polls.
When asked about winning only five seats, Chyne pointed out that the difference was not significant, as the party had secured only seven seats in the last MDC elections. He asserted that UDP would work towards strengthening its base for the 2028 Assembly elections.
Regarding the selection of an Opposition leader in KHADC, Chyne stated that all opposition MDCs would meet on Friday to reach a consensus, dismissing any speculation of a tussle between NPP and UDP over the position.
Earlier, another UDP leader, Pius Marwein, acknowledged that while every party would prefer the Opposition leader to be from their side, a final decision would be made in the scheduled meeting on Friday.
Commenting on the party’s performance in the MDC polls, Marwein remarked, “Politics changes quickly, and we must accept its ups and downs.”
