SHILLONG, March 3: Shillong’s growing urban congestion has long been a matter of concern, with traffic snarls becoming an unavoidable part of daily life. Amid efforts to ease the burden on the city’s roads, TMC MLA from Nongthymmai Charles Pyngrope lauded the Sustainable Transport and Efficient Mobility Society (STEMS) buses initiative, emphasizing the need for a significant expansion of the service.
“If just 30 buses can bring noticeable relief to Shillong’s traffic congestion, imagine what 300 buses could do,” the legislator said, pointing out that fewer private vehicles on the road could drastically improve the situation.
He stressed that enhancing the public transport network is key to tackling the worsening gridlock in the capital city.
Shillong, with its narrow roads and limited parking spaces, has been battling uncontrolled vehicular growth for years. The city’s traffic congestion is worsened by insufficient public transport options, forcing residents to rely on private vehicles. While the introduction of the STEMS buses has provided some relief, many believe a larger fleet could have a transformative impact.
