SHILLONG, March 9: In a significant breakthrough, a man accused in a theft case in Ri-Bhoi, who had been absconding for over four years, has been traced and apprehended in Kerala.
The accused, Ranjan Borgohain, son of Kamal Borgohain and a resident of Duliajan in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, escaped from police custody on November 20, 2020.
He had been arrested earlier in connection with a theft case registered under Khanapara PS Case No. 52(11)2020 u/s 381 IPC but managed to evade law enforcement ever since.
The prolonged manhunt ended earlier this week when Ri-Bhoi Police, acting on a crucial lead, tracked Borgohain to Perumbavoor, an industrial hub in Kerala, where he had been working as a labourer under a false identity.
Once his location was confirmed, the Kerala Police were immediately alerted, and a formal request for assistance was sent to the Ernakulam district police chief.
On March 7, acting swiftly, the Ernakulam police apprehended the fugitive. A team from Ri-Bhoi police then travelled to Kerala, and after securing a transit remand from the local court, formally arrested Borgohain on Saturday.
He would be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi, on Sunday.
Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore expressed gratitude to the Kerala Police for their prompt cooperation and support in apprehending the long-absconding accused.
