DUBAI, March 9: Indian captain Rohit Sharma registered an unwanted milestone ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, as he lost his 12th consecutive toss in ODIs during the match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 9.
This streak, which began in November 2023, now places him alongside West Indies legend Brian Lara, who also endured 12 successive toss defeats as captain between October 1998 and May 1999.
Other captains with long streaks of toss losses include Peter Borren of the Netherlands, who lost 11 straight between March 2011 and August 2013, while England’s Jos Buttler, USA’s Monank Patel, former England skippers Eoin Morgan and Nasser Hussain all suffered nine consecutive toss defeats in their respective careers. Adding to India’s frustration, the team has now lost 15 consecutive ODI tosses, the longest streak by any team in the format’s history. While tosses are purely based on luck, Rohit’s repeated misfortune has sparked widespread discussion among fans and analysts.Despite the toss being a matter of chance, its significance in setting the tone for a match cannot be ignored, especially in high-pressure encounters like a tournament final.
