SHILLONG, March 10: The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is facing challenges in implementing the Shillong Western Bypass project due to objections from villagers over compensation matters.
The villagers in Umraleng are not allowing the implementing agency to carry out the work, and despite attempts to pacify the villagers, they refuse to allow the construction work. The opposition has led to difficulties for the implementing agency due to the hilly area and greenfield alignment.
Efforts by the Ri-Bhoi district administration to resolve the issue have been unsuccessful, and the problem is expected to delay the project.
Another area in package 3 of the Shillong-Dawki road project is facing similar issues, as the East Khasi Hills administration has not been able to hand over compensation to landowners, leading to objections from locals.
