Tura, March 14: A complaint with the South Garo Hills police after dead fish appeared on the surface of the Simsang River near Siju.
The complaint was filed on Thursday at the Siju PS by the general secretary of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) – Siju regional unit, Welbing Sangma, who alleged that some miscreants have apparently contaminated the water of the river leading to a lot of local fish varieties dying and surfacing.
“It has been observed that the water in the Simsang river has been contaminated by a substance which has led to a lot of fish dying. The alarming situation has drawn public ire and has raised serious questions about the water safety of Simsang,” said Welbing in his complaint.
The students’ union asserted that the issue has not only hurt the local aquatic system but poses a significant hazard to public health.
“We suspect that the contamination may be due to the dumping of illegal waste materials into the river and thus seek an investigation to find those responsible for the contamination. Further we urge you to take preventive measures to ensure public and aquatic safety,” the GSU general secretary said in the complaint.
