Shillong, March 21: India’s midfield suffered a setback ahead of their crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Bangladesh, as Brandon Fernandes has been ruled out due to injury.
Winger Udanta Singh has been called up as his replacement.
Fernandes sustained the injury during India’s commanding 3-0 victory over the Maldives in an international friendly on March 19. The midfielder slipped on the turf late in the first half and had to be stretchered off.
Confirming the development, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) stated, “Brandon Fernandes has been released from the Indian squad due to an injury he picked up against the Maldives. Udanta Singh has joined the national camp in Shillong.”
Head coach Manolo Marquez had earlier hinted at Fernandes’ unavailability following the Maldives match.
India are already dealing with multiple injury concerns, with striker Manvir Singh and speedy winger Lallianzuala Chhangte also sidelined. However, the squad received a massive boost with the return of legendary forward Sunil Chhetri, who came out of international retirement to strengthen India’s push for Asian Cup qualification. Chhetri marked his return in style, netting his 95th international goal against the Maldives.
Placed in Group C alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Singapore, India must top the group to secure direct qualification for the continental tournament.
The highly anticipated clash against Bangladesh is set for March 25 in Shillong.
