Tura, Mar 27: A day after the appointment of a new Pro-vice chancellor for the Tura campus of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), members of the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) on Thursday extended its gratitude and appreciation for the appointment of Professor Dr. Fameline K. Marak to the aforesaid post.
It may be mentioned that the NEHU Tura campus had been without a Pro-VC for close to four years and had seen numerous protests by students, seeking an appointment to ensure progress within the university.
“This highly anticipated appointment meets a need that has gone unfulfilled for almost four years when our campus has been operated under the direction of a Director-in-Charge. Although the Director-in-Charge was responsible for carrying out the operations of the campus, the role had built-in restrictions, especially in decision-making at the university headquarters,” said the union in a statement.
It said that with Marak’s appointment as the pro-VC, the campus finally has a direct representative in the university’s major decision-making forums.
“As a member of the university committee at the headquarters level, the PVC will be in a position to actively engage in policy matters, plead the cause of our campus, and strive towards solving the long-standing issues that have hampered our academic and infrastructural development,” said union president, Chakram D Sangma.
The union rued that despite being a crucial learning centre for the Garo Hills, NEHU Tura continues to be plagued by various issues.
“Although affiliated with 17 colleges, our campus has grappled with meager infrastructure, poor hostel accommodations, irregular faculty and non-teaching staff recruitment, lack of basic departmental buildings and an inadequacy of lab equipment. The lack of a PVC has also further added to these problems, keeping our voices unheard at the headquarters of the university,” it said.
Wishing the new PVC the very best, the union expressed its willingness to work hand in hand in ensuring the best for everyone.
“May her term usher in much-needed changes, better academic prospects, and the long-overdue transformation that our campus truly deserves,” added the union.
