SHILLONG, March 31: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has proposed to take up a new initiative titled ‘Integrated Eco-Tourism and Sustainable Agri-Based Livelihood Development Project in Meghalaya’.
The project aims to enhance economic development and livelihood opportunities by integrating nature-based tourism with climate-smart agricultural practices. It will follow a cluster-based approach, focusing on key tourism destinations with significant natural and cultural value. Within these clusters, the project will support the sustainable management of forests and agricultural lands to enhance ecotourism.
By linking climate-smart agriculture with tourism, the initiative is expected to create diverse economic opportunities for local communities beyond traditional tourism services.
As part of this initiative, various projects will be undertaken to boost Meghalaya’s eco-tourism sector. These include the development of a Music Village and Cultural Experience Hub at Wahken, which aims to promote local traditions and heritage.
The Living Root Bridges Museum and hiking trails to Kongthong and Nongblai at Wahlyngkhat will highlight the state’s unique natural wonders.
Additionally, the Rain and Bamboo Interpretation Center at Mawsynram-Dongrum will be established to educate visitors about the region’s distinctive ecological features.
The plan also includes the development of the Rit Mawksir Viewpoint Complex and Mawjynbuim Tourist Center in the Mawsynram Circuit, further enhancing Meghalaya’s tourism potential.
