SHILLONG, March 31: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved Rs 1186.20 crore for the four-laning of a 13 km stretch of NH-37 from Silchar (near Budha Nagar) in Assam, a project expected to benefit Meghalaya as well.
Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the four-laning work will cover the NH-37 stretch from Silchar (near Budha Nagar) in Assam to Jiribam in Manipur.
He stated that the corridor will significantly enhance connectivity between Meghalaya, Assam and Manipur by linking Imphal through the Jiribam-Silchar-Ratacherra-Kalain-Jowai-Shillong route on NH-37, thereby ensuring seamless access to Manipur’s capital.
The proposed greenfield alignment will improve access for settlements along the existing road, fostering economic activities and facilitating better connectivity to healthcare, education and marketplaces. This infrastructure upgrade is also likely to strengthen social linkages and improve travel efficiency.
Additionally, the project is expected to boost economic and employment opportunities by providing better access to markets, production centres and other economic hubs, contributing to the region’s overall development and prosperity.
