M’laya karatekas shine at KIO U-21 & senior nat’l championship

Shillong, April 1: Victory and determination defined Meghalaya’s campaign at the Karate India Organisation’s (KIO) U-21 and Senior National Championship 2025, as the state’s karatekas returned home with three bronze medals.
The prestigious competition, held at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad from March 27-29, witnessed remarkable performances from Meghalaya’s 15-member contingent, proving their mettle on the national stage.
Led by experienced coaches Donboklang Lyngdoh and Rodrick Syiem, the Meghalaya team faced off against some of the country’s finest karatekas, demonstrating skill, perseverance, and an unwavering fighting spirit. Among the standout athletes, Kynjailin L Mawnai clinched bronze in the U-21 Women’s -50kg category, a testament to her agility and tactical excellence. Larisha Kurbah added to the state’s medal tally by securing bronze in the Senior Women’s -55kg category, showcasing her resilience and technical prowess.
The third bronze came from the Men’s Team Kata event, where the trio of Gideon Tympuin, Ferdinand Samkupar Rani, and Gregorwilson Makdoh delivered a synchronized and disciplined performance that impressed the judges. Their execution of kata, a form of choreographed movements embodying precision and control, underscored Meghalaya’s growing expertise in the sport.The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) hailed the achievements of its athletes, emphasizing the significance of their success in bolstering the state’s reputation in martial arts. AMKA officials commended the dedication of both the players and their coaches, attributing the victories to rigorous training, strategic preparation, and the unwavering support from the local karate community.
Meghalaya’s karate scene has seen consistent growth over the years, with athletes making their mark at regional and national levels. The recent triumph at the KIO U-21 and Senior National Championship reinforces the state’s potential as a hub for martial arts talent. With continued investment in training facilities, coaching programs, and athlete development, Meghalaya’s karatekas are poised to achieve even greater heights in the years to come.
