SHILLONG, April 3: A 58-year-old doctor from Manipur, who operates a clinic in Pyndengumiong village, Mairang, Eastern West Khasi Hills, has been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh for sexually assaulting a minor in 2020.
The sentence was pronounced by Special Judge of the POCSO Court in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, M Kumar, convicting the doctor, Ayam Sunil Khuman, under Sections 6 and 10 of the POCSO Act. Following a written FIR received on July 27, 2020, Mairang Police registered a case (Case No. 23(07)2020) under Sections 7 and 8 of the POCSO Act. The investigation, led by WPSI R.R. Marak, resulted in Khuman’s arrest and subsequent judicial custody.
After the trial, Special Judge (POCSO) M Kumar found Khuman guilty and announced the sentence.
Additionally, he was sentenced to five years of simple imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000 under Section 10. Failure to pay the fines will result in an additional six months of simple imprisonment.
In another judgment, Special Judge (POCSO) Kumar convicted two more persons for sexual assault perpetrated on a minor victim in two separate cases.
In the first case one Buksar Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi (37), a resident of Dombahkseh village, Eastern West Khasi Hills, was awarded imprisonment for 20 years with a fine of Rs 15000, and in default of the fine, the convict would have to undergo further simple imprisonment of another 6(six) months.
The FIR in this case was filed on January 4, 2023.
Another person, Phrangsngi Ryntathiang (27), a resident of Dongkiingding village, Eastern West Khasi Hills, was convicted for sexually assaulting a minor. FIR in this case was registered on July 4, 2023.
After completion of the trial, Special Judge M Kumar sentenced Ryntathiang to undergo imprisonment for three years with a fine of Rs 10,000. In default of the fine, the convict would have to undergo further simple imprisonment of another six months.
