RESUBELPARA, April 3: A co-passenger in a vehicle passing through Mendipathar, North Garo Hills (NGH), was allegedly injured after a CRPF personnel’s AK rifle accidentally went off during an incident on Wednesday.
According to police sources, at around 11:30 pm, a patrolling team from Mendipathar Police Station and CRPF personnel were on duty near Pushpa Cloth Store at the Mendipathar Bazaar tri-junction when a white car (AS01AM7750) approached at high speed from the direction of Mendipathar Police Station in a rash and negligent manner. The vehicle allegedly attempted to run over a CRPF personnel sitting in front of the store.
Sensing imminent danger, the CRPF personnel moved away and then approached the vehicle. However, the driver allegedly accelerated again in an attempt to run over them and flee.
“During the incident, on apprehension of danger and on suspicion of being attacked by criminals, the duty party tried their best to stop the said vehicle, but the vehicle tried to escape,” informed the police in a statement.
In apparent self-defence, one of the CRPF personnel cocked his AK rifle while attempting to open the vehicle’s door. At that moment, the driver accelerated again.
As the vehicle moved, the rifle accidentally discharged, hitting one of the occupants, identified as Neobirth R. Marak (28) of Thapa Darenchi, Resubelpara Police Station.
Neobirth, who was sitting in the co-driver’s seat, sustained bullet injuries on both thighs.
The injured was immediately taken to Mendipathar PHC along with the driver, Sengrim K. Sangma, of Thapa Darenchi.
Medical reports confirmed Neobirth’s injuries, and he was referred for further evaluation. Reports also indicated that he was intoxicated during the incident.
While Sengrim was unharmed, police stated that his blood alcohol content (BAC) was recorded at 1.9 g/L, indicating heavy intoxication.
Additionally, a large quantity of alcohol bottles was also found in the vehicle.
