SHILLONG, April 3: Tura MP Saleng Sangma has condemned the attacks on Christians in various parts of the country. His statement comes in the wake of a recent incident in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, where assailants attacked two Catholic priests and harassed several pilgrims.
Saleng and other Opposition members, led by the Congress, staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha on Thursday in protest against the alleged attack. Congress members later held a protest in the Parliament complex against the reported attack on two priests, demanding justice for the victims and safety for Christians.
Sangma expressed concern over the rising number of attacks on the Christian community, stating that as many as 753 incidents were reported in the past year.
Meanwhile, the Tura MP also criticised the NDA government over the passage of the Waqf Bill, accusing the ruling party of forcing it through Parliament without proper debate. “We waited until 2:30 AM to speak on the issues of Waqf and Manipur, but we were not given the opportunity. This is a murder of democracy and unconstitutional,” Sangma said over the phone from New Delhi.
