IIM confers degrees on 475 students at 16th annual convocation
SHILLONG, April 4: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday credited India’s success in navigating global economic slowdowns to transformative initiatives like Digital India.
Addressing the 16th annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, he observed that India is resilient and rapidly progressing economy.
Describing India as the “country of the decade”, the chief minister exhorted the outgoing students to harness their education in service of the nation.
Conrad further stated that the outgoing students are entering one of the most promising phases in India’s development.
Honeywell India president Ashish Modi, on the other hand, congratulated the graduates and shared five key life lessons.
First, he encouraged the students to stay hungry and work hard, assuring them that success will follow. Secondly, he emphasised the importance of speaking up and advised students not to be passengers in their own lives. Thirdly, he urged them to strive to be the best at whatever they choose to do. Fourthly, he highlighted the critical role of effective communication in professional and personal growth. Lastly, Modi underscored the significance of health—both physical and mental—as a foundation for a fulfilling life and career.
On the occasion, IIM Shillong Director, Prof. DP Goyal, presented the annual report of the institute. He highlighted major achievements during the academic year 2024–25, including increased global engagement and local outreach.
Goyal also mentioned about the signing of 31 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with renowned international management institutions and the upcoming launch of the Integrated Programme in Management (IPM).
He also highlighted IIM Shillong’s commitment to integrating global standards with India’s rich cultural legacy.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Shishir Kumar Bajoria, mentioned about the significance of the convocation attire made from locally woven Ryndia eri silk, which was recently granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
He said it symbolises the resilience and cultural heritage of Northeast India.
Bajoria then urged the graduates to embrace social responsibility, uphold national values and contribute meaningfully to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
It may be mentioned that the convocation marked a significant milestone for 475 graduating students.
Degrees were conferred upon 381 students from the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) 2023-25, 54 from the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEx) 2024-25 and 35 from the Post Graduate Programme for Working Executives (PGPWE) 2023-25. Further, five scholars were awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
The ceremony concluded with a formal pledge led by Professor Rohit Joshi, Dean (Academics), along with programme chairs.
The pledge, taken by all graduating students and scholars, reaffirmed their dedication to ethical conduct, professional excellence and societal responsibility as they embark on their careers.
