SHILLONG, April 7: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday undertook the serene Rhododendron Riot Trek, highlighting its natural beauty and historical significance.
With East Khasi Hills observing a holiday for Shad Suk Mynsiem, the Chief Minister, along with a group of officers, embarked on the 2.5-hour trek route located in Upper Shillong. The trail, often overlooked by locals and tourists alike, offers a unique blend of natural charm, historical elements, and a refreshing burst of clean air.
Sangma noted that the route once served as a passage used by the British and features remnants of bunkers from World War II that are still visible today. He also pointed out the presence of systematically constructed retaining walls along the path — a testament to the area’s past importance.
“This trek lies in the heart of Shillong city and is an experience to behold, with lush greenery and the beautiful blooms of rhododendron flowers. It offers a much-needed quietness from the busy city life,” said the Chief Minister.
The area also holds ecological significance, being rich in flora and fauna and serving as a vital source of water and clean air for the city of Shillong.
