Shillong, April 7: Amid reports that the state government in unlikely to accept the VPP-led KHADC EC’s recommendation of a name for the lone post of nominated MDC in the council, senior NPP leader and Rajya Sabha member, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi on Monday asked the state government to accept the recommendation of the autonomous district council on the nominated MDCs.
“Personally, I am of the view that the recommendation of the council should be accepted since it is an institution which gets its mandate from the people,” Kharlukhi told a section of reporters.
He said that as per the rules, the name for the nominated MDC should be proposed or recommended by the Executive Committee (EC) of the council to the state government.
He said that the VPP and the NPP, which are respectively leading the executive committees in the KHADC and the JHADC, will propose the names for the post of nominated MDCs.
The Rajya Sabha MP recalled instances in the past when the state government had overlooked the name proposed or recommended by the council.
Citing an example, Kharlukhi said that the government had decline the recommendation of the then GHADC EC which had proposed the name of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as the nominated member.
In December 2015, the KHADC had unanimously passed a resolution during a special session, nominating retired KHADC Judge J Reenbohn as the council’s nominated member.
The KHADC EC, led by Pynshngain N Syiem as the CEM, had strongly criticised the Congress-led government for recommending a different name to the KHADC, despite the council forwarding the name of a non-political candidate—J Reenbohn—for the post.
The then Congress-led government recommended a former minister for the nominated MDC’s post, bypassing the KHADC resolution.
This led to a deadlock, with the Governor returning both proposals to the state government for a final decision. As a result, no nominated MDC was appointed during that period.
