SHILLONG, April 10: The Meghalaya government has stated that there is no logical or sensible ground to oppose Aadhaar registration, as it is not forced.
Cabinet Minister and MDA 2.0 spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh argued that there are no grounds to oppose Aadhaar registration, as it is a central subject and would help create a database with the details of card holders.
He pointed out that those without Aadhaar registration will be deprived of certain government schemes.
He also noted that Meghalaya is one of the few states not to have completed the process of Aadhaar registration, unlike the rest of India.
Anti-Aadhaar protesters held a public rally on Wednesday to oppose the government’s alleged decision to push for mandatory Aadhaar-linking to access various government benefits.
A minor scuffle between protesters and police personnel also ensued, drawing criticisms.
The Meghalaya unit of the Awaken India Movement (AIM) and North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, argued that people should be free to decide whether to register for Aadhaar or not, and it would be unfair to impose it on those who are against it.
