SHILLONG, April 11: A Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards personnel, Ribok Dkhar Sawian (34), was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Guwahati on Thursday.
While the circumstances or the reasons behind his death remains unconfirmed, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday said Sawian might have died of cardiac arrest. “According to the information we received, he came out of the place of work and more or less he got a heart attack although it has not been confirmed,” Tynsong said.
Sawian, who hailed from Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills, was attending a training with 21 others on basic disaster management at the first NDRF battalion, Changsari camp, Guwahati.
The deceased was posted at the Disaster Training Centre of Home Guards, East Khasi Hills and was about to complete five years of service.
Fifteen personnel from the Civil Defence and Home Guards, Assam, are also part of the training programme.
Officials on Friday said the training started on April 7 and will conclude on June 6.
It was learned that Sawian asked for a bucket from his colleague after dinner on April 9 and left the barracks to take a bath at the bathing point.
His colleagues went out to search for him after he failed to return to the barracks. They found only his clothes at the bathing point.
“Immediately after this, everyone started searching in and around the area of the camp. They failed to locate the deceased,” an official said, adding that the search was resumed the morning after it was suspended on the night of April 9.
A missing person report was filed on Thursday at the police station concerned after the colleagues failed to trace Sawian.
The police later told them that an unidentified body had been found near the NDRF camp. The body was confirmed as Sawian’s after his colleagues showed the police his photo.
Officials said the NDRF immediately informed senior officials of the Civil Defence and Home Guards immediately after Sawian went missing. Members of his family were also alerted.
The police registered a case of unnatural death. “We are expecting the post-mortem report within two months,” the official said.
The body was handed over to the members of Sawian’s family on Friday after the post-mortem. The body was brought to his home in Mawryngkneng.
