SHILLONG, April 11: A week-long ordeal for commuters on the Jorabat-Khanapara stretch of GS Road has finally come to an end with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) suspending its pavement quality concrete panel installation work.
For almost a week, the Jorabat-Khanapara stretch of the highway witnessed massive traffic jams, even reducing emergency movement to a crawl.
India’s cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was one of the thousands of victims of the massive traffic jams and was forced to cut short his proposed visit to Kamakhya Temple on his return from Kaziranga National Park on Wednesday.
There are reports that several passengers missed their flights from Guwahati Airport due to the traffic congestion.
Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh on Friday confirmed that the situation has now become normal.
An official said that whenever such works are undertaken, a temporary service lane is always provided to divert traffic, but this was not the case here due to land acquisition hurdles on the Meghalaya side of the highway.
