SHILLONG, April 13: Shillong came alive on Sunday morning as hundreds of faithful gathered near the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians and other churches across state to mark Palm Sunday with devotion and joy.
In the state capital, the cathedral and other churches belonging to various Christian denominations saw large congregations of worshippers — children and adults alike — who participated in processions, holding palm fronds and chanting ‘Hosanna’ in unison. Dressed in traditional attire, many children led the early morning marches through the city streets, reenacting the historic journey of Christ with songs and hymns.
Special Palm Sunday services were held across Meghalaya, including in rural pockets, with churchgoers waving palm branches in remembrance of the welcome Jesus received from the people of Jerusalem.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, in a gesture of faith and solidarity, conveyed his wishes via X. “Wishing everyone a blessed Palm Sunday,” he wrote on his official X handle. “Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, celebrating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Let us reflect on peace, humility, and the journey toward Easter. Let us also remind ourselves of Jesus’ sacrifice, miracles, humility and His undying love.”
