New Delhi, April 13: In a pulsating encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday evening, Mumbai Indians (MI) held their nerve to edge past Delhi Capitals (DC) by 12 runs in a high-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) contest. Powered by a flurry of impactful batting performances and crucial strikes at the death, MI returned to winning ways in style.
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians got off to a rollicking start, courtesy of the left-handed duo of Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickelton. The young Varma played with authority and elegance, crafting a 33-ball 59 that featured a mix of wristy flicks and powerful drives. Rickelton, who opened the innings, provided early momentum with a brisk 41 off 25 balls, including five boundaries and a six.
While MI lost wickets at regular intervals, the middle order ensured the scoreboard kept ticking. Suryakumar Yadav looked in sublime touch during his 28-ball 40, blending innovation with precision, while Naman Dhir added the finishing touches with a fiery 38 off just 17 balls. His late burst pushed Mumbai’s total to an imposing 205 for 5 in their 20 overs.
Delhi Capitals, in reply, needed a solid platform but faltered early under pressure. Yet, the home side found a glimmer of hope in the form of Karun Nair, who played one of the best knocks of this IPL season so far. The seasoned campaigner smashed a scintillating 89 off 40 deliveries, laced with seven fours and six massive sixes, nearly turning the tide single-handedly.
However, with little support from the other end and the asking rate spiralling, Delhi’s innings unraveled quickly. The middle order crumbled against disciplined bowling from MI, with Karn Sharma proving to be the game-changer.
The veteran leg-spinner turned the screws in the middle overs, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 36. New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner also chipped in with two vital scalps, as DC were bowled out for 193 in 19 overs, falling 13 runs short of the target.
Among the bowlers for Delhi, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the pick, returning economical figures of 2 for 23 in his four overs. Youngster Vipraj Nigam also managed to grab two wickets, albeit at a cost of 41 runs, while Mukesh Kumar picked up one.
The win lifts Mumbai Indians’ morale as they gear up for the second half of the tournament, while Delhi Capitals will be left ruing a golden opportunity that slipped through their fingers despite Karun Nair’s heroics
In the end, it was a collective effort that saw Mumbai Indians through — a blend of power-packed batting, timely breakthroughs, and calm under pressure. While Karun Nair’s dazzling knock gave Delhi Capitals a real chance, it ultimately went in vain as MI’s bowlers held their nerve in the crucial moments. With this victory, Mumbai not only secures two valuable points but also sends out a strong message to the rest of the league — they are far from done this season.(PTI)
