Lahore, April 16:Sam Billings, the experienced England wicketkeeper-batter, has subtly settled the long-standing debate between the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) with a classy response that has won praise from cricket fans across the globe.
Currently representing Lahore Qalandars in the ongoing PSL 2025, Billings was speaking at the post-match presentation after his side’s comprehensive victory over Karachi Kings on Tuesday. As is often the case, the inevitable PSL vs IPL comparison cropped up during the interaction.
Billings, with a smile, defused the question with humour and grace. “You want me to say something silly, don’t you?” he quipped, triggering laughter all around. “The great thing about cricket is that everywhere you go around the world, you have to adapt to conditions. Whether it’s India, Pakistan, Australia, or England—you always have to adjust as a cricketer.”But the Englishman didn’t shy away from offering his honest opinion.
“I think it’s hard to look past the IPL as the premier competition,” he said candidly. “It’s pretty obvious. Every other competition is just behind.”Billings also acknowledged the efforts made by leagues across the world, including The Hundred in England, the Big Bash League in Australia, and the PSL, in their bid to be recognised as the second-best T20 competition globally.
A seasoned campaigner in franchise cricket, Billings is well-acquainted with both leagues. He first featured in the PSL back in the 2015-16 season with Islamabad United and currently plies his trade with the Qalandars. In the IPL, he appeared in 30 matches between 2016 and 2022, representing franchises like Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders, scoring 503 runs at an average of 19.53.
While his remarks may not end the debate altogether, Billings’ thoughtful and respectful take certainly adds weight to the conversation—and reminds fans that mutual admiration across leagues is what keeps the spirit of cricket alive. (Agencies)
