SHILLONG, April 21: The East Khasi Hills police have confirmed that the four individuals, who were detected by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) at Shella market on Monday morning, are residents of Assam.
Despite the police confirmation, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem expressed concerns, stating that the individuals were returning from Dalia village in Shella, located near the Indo-Bangladesh international border, which raised strong suspicions of possible involvement in illegal cross-border trade.
Although the individuals claimed to be tourists, Synrem revealed that images of Bangladeshi currency found on their mobile phones added to the doubts about their activities.
He further stated that the organisation’s suspicions regarding their nationality arose after questioning them.
Synrem also said that he had personally reported the matter to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem.
Following this, the SP instructed the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sohra to visit Shella Police Station and carry out an investigation.
According to Synrem, the SDPO later confirmed that the four individuals are residents of Nagaon district in Assam.
