SHILLONG, April 23: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has raised concerns over the rising pollution levels in various parts of the state. His remarks came in the wake of Byrnihat being tagged as the most polluted place in the world.
“We are actively pursuing the matter to ensure that our towns and cities are pollution-free,” Syiem said, adding that the government is not turning a blind eye to the issue.
When asked about the alarming pollution levels in Byrnihat, he stated that the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) is closely monitoring the situation. He also emphasised that since both Assam and Meghalaya contribute to the pollution in the area, a joint effort is needed from both states.
According to Syiem, there must be a clear directive that for every tree cut down, hundreds more should be planted. He also highlighted the urgent need to address the issue of rampant forest fires.
Syiem further stressed that protecting the environment is not solely the government’s responsibility — it is also the duty of every citizen to ensure that the surroundings remain clean and the air we breathe is fresh.
