NONGPOH, April 29: A 41-year-old man from Mukhla village lost his life on Monday afternoon after a reckless stunt and overspeeding led to a fatal accident on the Umiam flyover in Ri-Bhoi.
The deceased, identified as Nabin Singh, was reportedly performing a stunt by sitting on the door frame of a speeding car when the vehicle lost control and crashed into the flyover’s safety barrier. The car, bearing registration number ML05 AC5114, was en route from Umroi towards Guwahati and was driven by Govinda Biswas, a resident of Assam.
Due to the high impact, Nabin Singh was thrown off the vehicle and fell from the flyover, suffering critical head injuries. He was rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Two other occupants of the car — Bijoy Singh, the younger brother of the deceased, and Baris Marboh from Puriang village — sustained injuries and were treated at the same hospital.
The vehicle involved in the crash has been seized and taken to Umiam Police Station. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on reckless driving and endangering life through dangerous stunts.
In the wake of the tragedy, Ri-Bhoi Police issued a stern warning, urging the public to refrain from performing stunts on roads and to avoid overspeeding, stating: “A moment of fun may become a life full of pain.”
