SHILLONG, May 1: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday handed over scholarships under the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarship Scheme to 44 athletes across 10 disciplines during a send-off ceremony for Team Meghalaya.
The team is set to participate in the Khelo India Games 2025, scheduled to be held in Bihar from May 4 to 15.
The scholarship scheme aims to support and nurture sporting talent in the state. Over the past six years, the government has invested significantly in sports infrastructure and introduced policy interventions to promote a thriving sporting ecosystem. The new scheme is expected to further empower athletes in their pursuit of national excellence and also lay the groundwork for Meghalaya to host the National Games in 2027.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said, “These scholarships recognize the hard work and dedication of our athletes, encouraging them to strive for greater achievements and bring pride to Meghalaya and the nation.”
Reflecting on the state of sports when the MDA government assumed office in 2018, Sangma noted that the sector was hindered by a lack of policy, inadequate infrastructure, and minimal financial support.
“The government took bold steps, including the revival of the Meghalaya Games — which had been held only twice in 48 years until 2019. Today, the Games are conducted on a rotational basis across districts, fostering inclusive participation and helping discover grassroots talent,” he added.
He also highlighted the government’s mission-mode approach to building and upgrading sports infrastructure in both urban and rural areas, including the development of training facilities, stadiums, and community-level sports hubs.
Describing the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarship Scheme as a way to acknowledge exceptional sporting talent and ease financial burdens, he said, “While the financial support may not be large, even modest assistance can make a big difference when used wisely. The scholarship is not just about money — it’s about recognition.”
“It’s a message to every athlete that your hard work matters, and we stand with you,” he affirmed.
The Chief Minister also shared updates on preparations for the National Games 2027. “Meghalaya is working rigorously to ensure a world-class event. The state has committed to a comprehensive timeline for urban renewal, beautification, and environmental clean-up. Key initiatives include the rejuvenation of the Wah Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers, which symbolize the broader effort to beautify Shillong, Tura, and Jowai — all of which are expected to play central roles during the Games,” he said.
“This is not just about sports. It is about showcasing the spirit, talent, and beauty of Meghalaya to the rest of the country and the world,” he added.
It may be mentioned that the state government has awarded scholarships worth Rs 5.24 crore to 614 young athletes across 27 sporting disciplines.
This initiative, part of the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarship Scheme 2024–25, aims to encourage and support emerging sporting talent throughout the state.
The felicitation ceremony was also attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri, Director of Sports D.D. Shira, MSOA Working President John F. Kharshiing, and other distinguished guests.
