SHILLONG, May 4: In a proud moment for Meghalaya, Shillong-born musician Jiya captivated audiences at the Wave Summit 2025 in Mumbai, one of India’s most prestigious cultural events.
The summit brought together some of the biggest names in Bollywood, international artists and industry leaders. Amidst this stellar gathering, Jiya emerged as a standout talent—known for her originality, authenticity and sense of purpose.
Her musical journey began not in a formal academy but in the heart of her home in Shillong, under the mentorship of her mother, a homemaker who became her first teacher.
Without any formal training, Jiya learned music in the most organic way—through discipline, deep listening and her mother’s emotional guidance, who balanced motherhood, household responsibilities and mentorship with grace.
Over the years, Jiya has established herself as a drummer, percussionist and live performer. She has collaborated with well-known independent bands and several Khasi bands from Meghalaya, gaining recognition for her stage presence and rhythmic mastery.
Her talent has taken her across India, with national exposure through reality shows such as Bollywood Ka Ticket, Battle of the Bands, and Symphony of India (Saregama Music & DD National), among others.
At Wave Summit 2025, Jiya was presented with a trophy of recognition for her outstanding performance and contributions to the live music scene, a moment of pride for the Northeast.
“Everything I’ve done—every note, every beat—has roots in Shillong. My mother gave me music, and my hometown gave me identity,” she said.
While honoured by the recognition, Jiya considers this just the beginning. Her goal is to make her parents and friends proud through unwavering dedication and to reach the pinnacle of her musical career.
Beyond music, Jiya carries a heartfelt mission, which is to represent and promote the talent of Meghalaya and the people of Shillong.
“I want the world to know that every corner of India, including our small but vibrant towns, holds talent that deserves to be seen, celebrated and heard. Meghalaya has rhythm in its soil, and it’s time we shine on bigger stages,” an ecstatic Jiya said.
